Sprint1: The Beginnings

Hello World!
This is the first of two-week devlogs for Edric Frame, my first solo game. Going for creepy but pretty, like a serious fairy-tale. Haunted Victorian castle with a twist. I have first assets, character controller in process, and in the first sprint, i managed the serious plan for the game.

First Sprint Update:

  • I focused on design, documentation, and scope. Took all my ideas I gathered over a long time, and gone from "basic platformer" idea of a game I had, to making a piece of art I so desire to finish

  • Defined story and setting, which led to changing the name Paladin Souls to Edric Frame. Then focused on art, mechanics, and core experience. Did plans, art design texts, and sketches.

  • Not allowing features to creep much, and keeping scope so i can manage to finish it in my tight time after work and on weekends. So I decided on making unique, core mechanic that would be fun, and also not too complicated. (Will tell about it, as I began to implement it.) And the rough scope was set. Took a lot of time, and filled my notebooks and internal wiki with data.

  • Then worked a bit on character art style and designs. First iterations are more chibi-like, and i am going with more like book illustration-ish.

Next Sprint Goal:

  • For the next sprint, I want to create more art and set exact time estimations of making it. One concept for every part of the game, and asset pack for making alpha.

  • Next part would be to continue on (already in progress) character controller. Maybe to touch on principles of my planned core mechanics. (If there will be time. Else, that will come in another sprint.

Additional Thoughts:

  • I always loved open world games, and always wanted to create one. I am not crazy enough to start my first (serious) project as a metroidvania, but I am crazy enough to try to implement open world anyway. So I present to you, the mind loop. Which also fits with my love for exploration aspects, and also beautifully fits to my lore and story setting of this game. (Spoileeers)

I will update you at the beginning of December, after the second sprint is done.
